Enjoy a day of crisp autumn air while experiencing
history as it comes to life at Walnut Grove Plantation.
Recapture the past by participating in basketry,
blacksmithing, candledripping, doll
making, dyeing, quilting,
soapmaking, spinning, weaving and a
wide variety of colonial skills demonstrated by
craftsmen in period clothing.

Be swept back to the Revolutionary 1780 western front
when "Bloody Bill" Cunningham, a deserter of the
American cause, attacked Walnut Grove Plantation.
Captain Cunningham and his desperate band of tories will
re-enact the raid on Walnut Grove to murder Captain
Steadman and two other American Patriots.
Witness the brave heroine, Kate Barry, warn her husband
and his troops of the attack...too late to save Captain
Steadman and his friends...but in time to keep the house
from being burned.

Fall 2006 Homeshool Day Latta Plantation
October 13th, 2006
10am-4pm
Huntersville, NC Celebrate Fall at this Living History Event set aside
for Home Schoolers of all ages. Tour the circa 1800 Latta home and see
candlemaking demonstrations in the historic kitchen. Taste fresh cider
from the press and visit the historic breeds of farm animals. See short
staple cotton in full bloom and learn how it is processed!
Children 4 and under can look for surprise-filled fall eggs in the hay
maze. Students can learn about Charlotte gold mining history through
demonstrations and storytelling by Ray Source. Extra activities will
include candle dipping, gold panning and pony rides. There will be
homeschool vendors, a food vendor and craft vendors on site, and
activities will be ongoing throughout the day.
Admission is $4 for person, ages 4 and under are free. Candle dipping
and gold panning each cost an additional $1 Pony rides, provided by the
Latta Equestrian Center, will be an additional $6 RSVP to Rachel Hooey

About Historic Latta Plantation
Historic Latta Plantation (www.lattaplantation.org), once a successful
cotton plantation, is now a living history farm. Costumed interpreters,
historic displays and hands-on activities allow visitors to experience
what life was like for the planters, yeoman farmers, and enslaved
African-Americans of the North Carolina backcountry in the early 19th
century. Historic Latta Plantation features the home of James Latta,
built ca. 1800, as well as original and replica outbuildings and
historically appropriate farming practices and livestock. Historic Latta
Plantation is owned by Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation and
administered by Latta Place, Inc. It is funded in part by Mecklenburg
County Parks and Recreation and the Arts and Sciences Council.
Directions
Historic Latta Plantation is located on Sample Road, off of Beatties
Ford Road in Huntersville, NC. Traveling from Charlotte on I-77 North,
take exit 16B (Sunset Road West,) make a right at the 2nd light onto
Beatties Ford Road, continue on Beatties Ford Road for approximately 5
miles and make a left onto Sample Road. Historic Latta Plantation is
located at the end of Sample Road. From the north on I-77 South, take
exit 23 (Huntersville). Go right off of the exit onto Gilead Road. Take
the third left, McCoy Road. At the stop sign, turn right on Beatties
Ford Road. Turn left onto Sample Road.

Annual Candlelight Tour at Ninety Six National Historic Park

1 pm to 4 pm:
Living History around the Black Swan
Tavern.

Ranger led battlefield tour (meet at the Black Swan Tavern).
8 pm:
DVD: Ninety Six: A Frontier Crossroad will stop showing. It
will be available from 8 am until 8 pm only.

to register.
Tours begin at 7 pm & leave every 10
mins.
The last Tour will leave at 8:20 pm.
The Visitor Center will be open 8 am to 9
pm.
Guided tours proceed along the one-mile historic trail,
which is illuminated by the soft glow of candlelight and torchlight.
Along the way, costumed volunteers portray Colonial citizens and
soldiers who tell stories of peace and war at old Ninety Six in the
1700’s. The haunting sounds of musket fire and fife & drums in the
darkness will help you relive an exciting period of this frontier
outpost. It’s an unusual program you will want to experience with the
whole family!
We will remember the soldiers that fought and died here
by illuminating the Patriot siegeworks and the historic Loyalist Star
Fort with a luminary for each Patriot and Loyalist life lost during the
1781 battle. Likewise at our Stockade Fort, we will honor the first
Patriot and first Loyalist killed here in 1775 during the first
Revolutionary War land battle in the South.
During the day, walk our historic trails, see our museum, historic
oil paintings, gift shop, and 10 minute DVD in our Visitor Center, then
stay for our Candlelight Tour.
Tickets will not be given out earlier than 6 pm on October 14. When
you arrive, visit our ticket tent near the main parking area to get your
tickets.
There is no charge to attend the activities, however,
donations are accepted. All donations are used for events within the
park.
Additional parking will be available.
Please bring a flashlight & wear comfortable walking
shoes.
Reservations are only necessary for groups.
In case of rain, the event will be cancelled and
not rescheduled.

Library Tour:
Here's an opportunity to have a special fall story time and safari tour
of the main branch library. We'd like to have a group for 4-6 year olds,
a group for 7-9, and a group for 10 and up. The 10 and up group will
have a
behind the scenes tour of the library and some information on research
resources. The tour will be on Friday, October 6 at 11:00. Bring a
picnic lunch for afterwards, if you'd like. There is no cost, but we
need a head count as soon as possible. So let me know if you're
interested.
Publix Tour:
Also, if you're interested in joining us for a tour of Publix (at
University Square - Old Buncombe and 25), please let me know. Again,
head counts are important. We'll be meeting on Friday, October 27th at
9:00.
